When we talk ownership we are talking about personal ownership. Call it a sense of personal responsibility, call it self reliance we choose to call it ownership. Neither an individual or an organization has any chance of maximizing their human productivity without ownership.  When we feel empowered to make decision to have "room" to do things as we want to do them (as long as the result is exceeded) we see the seeds of initiative sprouting. The days of "we were waiting to hear back from you..." diminish GREATLY.  People become self starters, self teachers, they find their motivation!  We manage less, produce more and have considerable fewer "personnel issues". As we transition ourselves to a more "individual ownership focused environment something else better go along with it.  What needs to go along with it is accountability.

Accountability starts first with you. Forget trying to hold others accountable when your actions clearly demonstrate you have no sense of personal accountability. So when we work with management and leadership we start with a "look  in the mirror" this is the only effective place to start accountability. Accountability is simple to describe yet very difficult to find outside the branches of the United States Military. It can be summed up in the following steps:

1- Explain clearly and ensure there is understanding of each individuals responsibilities, along with the focus and mission of the entire team and organization.

2- Explain clearly and ensure there is understanding of the expected RESULTS for each individual as well as the team and or organization.

3-Monitor and provide regular, timely, constructive feedback to each member of the team AS WELL AS YOURSELF.

4- Address behavior issues effecting productivity of an individual, the team or the organization IMMEDIATELY.
