Properly done focus among middle managers that is in alignment with the executive level and the rank and file is the definition of effective AND efficient management!
BENEFIT TO YOU: Significant increase in getting most important functions completed efficiently, more effective teams, buy in.
The reason we spend a good percentage, if not the majority of our days doing things that don't matter is we lack focus and alignment in our lives. The vast majority of time management systems and techniques are fundamentally flawed due to this. The objective is not to figure out how to get EVERYTHING done the objective is to get get everything that is IMPORTANT done.
The reason focus and alignment is one of the 5 keys to managerial excellence is that without it you will never consistently apply the other 4 keys. Focus refers specifically to YOU. Are you focused on what is most important the majority of your day? If you are not focused, there is little chance anyone around you will be either.
This is a perfect time to discuss two little words, effective and efficient. Without focus your can be very efficient, highly organized, turning out all kinds of stuff but without focus and alignment you might be very efficiently doing things that don't matter. Only with focus and alignment can you determine what is most important and therefore what is the most EFFECTIVE use of your time. Then you can seek to become most efficient.
Now a bit more about alignment. You might have great focus on what is most important for you and or your team/department. The issue is if this in not in alignment with the BIG FLICK, the organizations "most important" items then your focus will not result in you being effective. Alignment is simply ensuring all the "pieces" of the organization are working towards a single purpose (focus). So individual or team focus that supports the overall focus is the organizational definition of alignment.
