In one of the best selling business books of all time, Stephen Covey's "7 Habits of Highly Effective People" Habit #5 is "Seek first to understand, then to be understood" This is critical in active communications. You simply will not be able to communicate most effectively with others if you do not understand THEM.

We are complex, folks. How we see the world, hear it, feel it act towards it and think about it is based on a myriad of factors.  Generations, who raised us, where we were raised.  Our unique personality, our culture, our gender on and on it goes.   All of these factors directly influence how we communicate. Our fundamental challenge is we assume everyone understands us. Truth is for them to understand us we must do what Stephen Covey tells us in, "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" and seek first to understand them.
